X-Men: Apocalypse

Review: This movie isn’t awful. It’s definitely a step down from ‘First Class’ & ‘Days of Future Past,’ but it’s not a bad movie. Another X-Men movie that just leaves you full of questions and makes the timeline so confusing. My main question is how old is Havok supposed to be? My calculations would make him around 40? But he looks the same as he did when he was 20? And he has a teenage brother still in high school? Yes, that’s possible, but it just raises so many questions and I’m going to have to investigate this timeline which shouldn’t be necessary. The costumes and character designs in this movie are great (I love that Cyclops wears Ray-Ban sunglasses). Also Professor X’s hair (though clearly a wig) is (as the kids would say) a slay. I have so many little random notes of positive things. The Quicksilver scene was a great follow-up to his scene in Future Past, and although not quite as good, shows how OP he is. Apocalypse looks extremely out of place, but for a villain who is an Ancient Egyptian, he should so that’s good. Seeing Professor X just punching the crap out of the villain is quite fun. I enjoy the fact all of these movies are willing to let other languages be spoken and that when in other countries they are (Polish, Swahili, Russian, German, Arabic, & Egyptian). When Magneto turns face and he puts the giant X in the ground, gosh that was cinematic. And finally, the use of Weapon X was X-cellent. Ha nice. For real though, that Wolverine cameo was gas.

High: Has to once again be the casting. The returning McAvoy, Fassbender, Lawrence, Till, Peters & Hoult are stellar. And some of the new additions are great. Some of them. Foremost is Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, he genuinely feels like a young version of James Marsden’s character and is so effective in his role. Oscar Isaac plays a great villain in a completely unrecognizable role. If I didn’t know this was Isaac, I don’t think I could tell under the make-up, costume, & vocal performance. Alexandra Shipp plays her role as Storm well & Kodi Smit-McPhee literally peeled the the character of Nightcrawler of the page. He is such a fun character that plays the comedic relief role that Quicksilver does in Future Past, and is just as effective and funny.

Low: While most of the cast was great, some of it was also under used. I don’t know why they had Angel, Psylocke, & Jubilee in this movie in roles that were going to feel important just for them to not do anything. And finally, Jean Grey sucked. I don’t necessarily fault Sophie Turner for this, but her performance was bad. She made Jean annoying, unlikable, & frustrating.
