Love Hurts

Review: This movie hurts. Just kidding it’s not THAT bad. It’s just meh. The action was very solid, like you’d expect, but there were really only a couple of memorable shots that I nodded at with approval. This fits into the mold of movies inspired by John Wick (not tonally) as the guy who is out of the life getting dragged back in. I mentioned this in my John Wick review a couple days ago that I really liked the captioning they used, this movie did something similar but unfortunately it was only one line of dialogue so that blows. I didn’t love the introspective thought narration of the characters that they used. I’m going to write something up about this, but Ariana DeBose is on a really rough streak of movies since her Oscar win. I think DeBose & Ke Huy Quan are a really odd couple on paper, and after seeing this movie, they are an odd couple onscreen too. This movie featured some notable figures like Daniel Wu, Sean Astin, Marshawn Lynch, & Drew Scott (yes the Property Brother), but no memorable characters aside from Mustafa Shakir’s ‘Raven’ who was cool stylistically. SPOILERS Also why the heck did Drew Scott get killed so brutally and right in front of the camera when the rest of the movie is fairly tame? Weird.

High: Ke Huy Quan is a very likable guy. And he is the highlight of this film. I just want to make it known that any negativity from me about this movie is never directed at him.

Low: The dialogue was not really doing anything for me. They tell you exactly what is going on & attempts at jokes are made, though mostly ineffective. It was a lot of trope-y lines like ‘why couldn’t you stay dead?!’ and things of that nature. Not great.
