Kinds of Kindness

Review: I honestly don’t have a super long review for this one. This is an anthology film from Yorgos Lanthimos, director of Best Picture nominee, ‘Poor Things.’ I wasn’t a fan of ‘Poor Things’ and I didn’t really like this movie either. I understood the praise of the visual side of ‘Poor Things,’ but just because something is absurd and different doesn’t mean it’s good. And I’m not necessarily saying these movies are only considered good because they’re weird, just that it doesn’t tickle my fancy. I still plan to watch some of Lanthimos’s other films (namely ‘The Favourite’ & ‘The Lobster’) so I’m not counting him out yet. Something I’ve learned about myself is one thing I can’t tolerate when it comes to watching movies. And I mean that in the sense that like there’s one things that will make me turn a movie off. I can watch bad movies. I can watch graphically violent movies. I don’t love horror, but I can watch scary if I so choose. But I can’t do cannibalism man. This movie’s wasn’t graphic, but even the mention of it made my stomach hurt. I tried watching ‘Bones and All’ and I had to turn that one off like 15 minutes in. Rough.

High: This film features an ensemble cast that appears as different characters in the 3 different stories the film tells. Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Mamoudou Athie, & Joe Alwyn. But Jesse Plemons stands out to me, especially in the first story. His performance is great and this is a widely shared opinion, as he won Best Actor at Cannes.

Low: The movie had three chances to get me invested in a story. And it managed to strike out on all three. I just couldn’t get into any of them. I feel like such a not good cinephile when I dislike movies like this, but oh well. Not gonna fake it.
