Civil War

Review: Overall this was a good movie that builds on a well thought out and relevant concept. What a dreary world we live in that this is a ‘relevant concept.’ The ensemble of Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, & Stephen McKinley Henderson all play of each other well and bring a lot of depth to each of their characters. It managed to play out a dystopian film while still feeling incredibly grounded & realistic (again, how dreary?). And I really need to mention Jesse Plemons’ character who had less than five minutes of screen time, a lot of which we saw in the trailer, but genuinely may have been the most memorable character from the whole movie.

High: I considered putting the concept here, but then I listened to the movie. The sound in this one was brilliant. I would imagine it will rightfully receive a nomination for Best Sound at the Oscars (‘Dune: Part Two’ would still be my winner). The score was also great and sometimes silenced out the onscreen audio, and it worked really well. The gunshots were also audible and realistic without being too loud, which is something some movies struggle with.

Low: I think a little more exposition at the beginning could’ve provided some more world building, but I do understand not wanting to expo-dump too much. Also, I realize that the setting is just America in the near future, so not too much context is necessary.
