A Quiet Place: Day One

Review: This prequel/spin-off of ‘A Quiet Place’ follows terminal cancer patient, Sam, English businessman, Eric, & curious cat, Frodo, as they navigate New York City during the beginning of an apocalypse. I’ll say the film got into the action pretty quickly, but still felt like it had a slow start. I think the introduction of Eric really helped the pace & tone of the film. I have a few random questions and complaints I want to through out there. Firstly, why did they call it ‘Day One?’ Because very little of the movie took place on the first day, in fact mostly it was days two & three. Secondly, why was Djimon Hounsou even in it? He’s a great actor and a welcome addition to any ensemble, but he was in like two scenes and served no purpose. I guess maybe the purpose was to connect it to the main films, but I admittedly haven’t seen ‘Part II’ in which he’s featured. Speaking of ‘Part II,’ John Krasinski is apparently actively working on the third and final entry of the main story and I would ask surely Joseph Quinn will return as Eric right?

High: Lupita Nyong’o & Joseph Quinn. The actors gave good performances as Sam & Eric in what could’ve easily been one-dimensional, stale characters. The quick bond and chemistry the two were able to display meant a lot to the story and I really appreciate a non-romantic bond between a male & female protagonist. The bar scene, especially was very sweet.

Low: I felt like at times the movie wasn’t interesting enough to garner my full attention, but obviously the gimmick of these movies is the minimal dialogue so you really have to pay attention to keep up.
