The Godfather

Review: My greatest embarrassment as a movie fan is that I had never seen ‘The Godfather.’ This grew to the point that I didn’t just want to watch it on a whim. I had a scratch-off poster of the 100 Greatest Films and I elected to save this for last. And here were my thoughts. I definitely understand why this film is so heralded. It’s cinematically wonderful. IF I based my ratings on the quality of film, not my personal enjoyment, this would probably be a perfect 10. However, based on my enjoyment, I was a tad underwhelmed. And this is no fault of the film. I want to make that clear. It was just the build up of ‘The Godfather.’ I think the biggest fault of many movies is the expectations of the viewers. If I went into this movie not knowing how anyone else felt about it, I would be incredibly pleased. But, that’s just not the case. I know this became less of a review of the film and more of a soapbox, but come on, you know this is a good movie. There’s nothing I can tell you that you haven’t heard.

High: The last half hour. After SPOILERS Vito dies and Michael takes over, this movie really took off for me. Michael just going berserk on everyone was awesome.

Low: This low is based on my expectations, like previously discussed. I felt like Marlon Brando was barely in the movie for what I’ve heard is one of the best performances. To me, Al Pacino was vastly superior (not that Brando was bad).

Rating: 8.5/10
