X-Men
Review: ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ really is about to have me rewatching all the X-Men films. This is a quality superhero film and I couldn’t imagine seeing/following this when it was first released. There are so many cool ‘comic book-esque’ moments e.g. Magneto controlling all the police officers guns. The effects are hit or miss, same look dated (like Senator Kelly melting), but same have aged incredibly well (Mystique’s transformations, but none better than Wolverine’s claws). I also think keeping the actual X-Men to just four members during the final act was a wise choice.
High: Gosh the cast. This incredibly movie was expertly cast and we continue to see that in the later films. The casting director/team went off. Patrick Stewart & Ian McKellen are literally pulled from the page as Professor X & Magneto. I could genuinely list every actor and say how perfect they were for their role. But I’d be foolish to not mention Hugh Jackman. Fun fact. He was not their first choice. Rock singer, Glenn Danzig was originally invited to audition in 1995, but he declined. Russell Crowe was the first choice of the director, but he also turned it down. Viggo Mortensen was brought in, but declined. And Dougray Scott was cast in the role, but had to drop after conflicts with ‘Mission: Impossible 2,’ which is an awful film by the way. Then, 3 weeks into filming they hired Australian stage actor, Hugh Jackman and a quarter of a century later, he can still play the character to perfection.
Low: Some of the transitions were pretty odd. In a couple of cases there was literally just a cut to black followed by a black screen (I kept thinking my Internet was cutting out), and some of the scene to scene transitions just were not very smooth. Another low is the incredibly awkward, and now infamous, line ‘Do you know what happens to a Toad when it’s struck by lightning?’
