Plankton: The Movie
Review: Sometimes movies don’t need to exist. And if you’re looking for a prime example of that, may I present to you: ‘Plankton: The Movie.’ Streaming exclusively on Netflix, this is the second SpongeBob spinoff film focused on another character after, ‘Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie.’ This one was rough. I loved SpongeBob as a kid so I figured I’d give this a chance. But it didn’t work. Maybe you’re thinking ‘of course not, you’re a grown man’ to which I’d let you know that there are tons of other movies targeted at kids that I enjoy, including ‘The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie’ which I watched just a few months ago and still enjoyed. I can’t exactly put my finger on what made this so bad, perhaps because there was so many things. The songs felt out of place. Plankton didn’t work as a central character because they couldn’t decide if he was supposed to be empathetic or antagonistic. And the character of SpongeBob himself is always on a fine line of endearing & annoying. This film he fully crosses the line over to annoying. I wouldn’t recommend watching this, even if you have kids to watch it with.
High: The familiar IP & characters were all this film had going for it. If it wasn’t one of my favorite characters from my childhood, my score would probably be in 1-1.5 range.
Low: The animation style was so questionable. If you’re going to make an unnecessary movie spinoff of a successful animated show, maybe at least use the same style that has contributed to your shows success? Just a thought.
