Deck the Halls
Review: This 2006 film follows two men, played by Danny DeVito & Matthew Broderick, who become neighbors and start to feud during Christmas as they ruin each other’s plans. Both of the men are pretty unlikable at times, which works well for the story. The story is supplemented by the two’s wives (Kristin Chenoweth & Kristin Davis) befriending each other, and their kids doing the same. Overall, this film falls a little flat (read more about that as my ‘Low’) and while I think it’s one that can be watched and enjoyed, it’s not a revisit-er. Just a random side not, Kristin Chenoweth is like the queen of Christmas movies. She just always pops up in random Christmas movies & I really respect that about her. Plus having her in a movie and having the climax of the movie being her singing is a great choice.
High: While the men were (intentionally) unlikable, I quite enjoyed the surrounding characters and the chemistry between Kristins Chenoweth & Davis. I really am not trying to dog too much on this movie, because it wasn’t THAT bad, but I just don’t really have too much else to say.
Low: The plot was just a little too much at times. And that’s saying a lot since it’s a Christmas movie. It felt like it was trying to recreate ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’ with wacky antics and outrageous characters, but it just didn’t hit quite the same. Also this feels like a good place to mention that Broderick’s speed skating outfit looks just like Vector from ‘Despicable Me.’
