Mickey 17
Review: One my most anticipated films of 2025, ‘Mickey 17’ was exactly what I was hoping it would be. Robert Pattinson got to once again really flex his acting muscle (which I might add, is very buff). The direction from Bong Joon-ho, as well as his writing, was really well done. Supporting performances from Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, & well, Robert Pattinson, filled out the film very nicely. The concept was incredibly original (I understand it’s not actually original & does have source material) and worked very nicely in film format. I think the effects were understated & not too heavily relied on, but complimented the film exactly how it needed them to. I really hope this film performs well at the box office because it truly has no reason not to. I understand it may be a little out there for some viewers, but in all honesty it was pretty grounded given its concept. I hope the early release doesn’t mean this film gets forgotten when this year is all said and done.
High: Robert Pattinson’s performance(s) as Mickey 17 & 18 were incredible. I love when an actor can truly play a dual role and make them entirely different characters, even more impressive when the two characters are clones of each other. Well I guess they couldn’t be clones of each other, but they’re both clones from the same source, so whatever. He really leaned into physicality in this role and his physical comedy was elite. I would absolutely love if Pattinson got some love when awards season rolls around, but I just don’t know the likelihood of that. Maybe he could at least garner a nomination for the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy? That would be rad.
Low: There were a couple times in the latter half of the film that it was losing me a bit and I was zoning out a little. But full disclosure, I was really tired. So, I’m really not faulting the film for that and in all honesty it’s impressive that it was able to pull me back in. Overall the story & pacing were both really well done, so I think this is a me issue more than anything else. One other thing I’ll say is that I wasn’t super invested in the creepers & really just wanted to see Pattinson be silly. My man Edmund summed it up best when he told me he just wanted to see some shenanigans with the two Mickeys, & I agree the film couldn’t benefited from a couple more shenanigans.
