Better Man
Review: Alright y’all. This movie had no right being as good as it was. A biopic about Robbie Williams were Williams is portrayed as a CGI chimp. For my American readers (so all of you I think), Robbie Williams is a massive popstar in the UK & I would honestly recommend this film whether you’re familiar with him or not. I didn’t recognize any of the songs, or even any of the names of the people (other than Oasis), but they did a good job making it approachable for someone with no knowledge. And a lot of the songs were lowkey bops. Plus Williams himself served as the narrator of the film & was very good. Very rarely do I watch a film that features no actors I’ve heard of, but this film fit that bill. In all honesty the only actor I even recognized was Damon Herriman, who played Nigel.
High: The concept of diverting from the typical musician biopic that is oh so prevalent right now by having your main character be an ape is original & I want to credit that. And the effects were amazingly done, like almost to the same scale that the ‘Planet of the Apes’ films achieve. It is never addressed or anything that he’s a chimp and honestly I kept forgetting that he was. And I mean that in a positive way. They just seamlessly blended it in to the story so it didn’t feel like a gimmick. Major credits for that & shoutout to Jonno Davies who did the motion capture & voice work.
Low: I guess if I had to pick a low, I would say that I was frustrated SPOILERS that the dad got this big moment in the spotlight after being a crap dad & his mom just got a quick shoutout. I understand it narratively and that that seems to what have happened in real life, but I just felt like he didn’t deserve it. I know it’s a silly complaint, but that’s all I got.
