Mt. Rushmore- Matthew McConaughey

Alright alright alright. One of the most likable & talented actors in all of Hollywood, Matthew McConaughey is a legend with tons of iconic roles. In this article I will highlight what I consider to be his best, most iconic, most synonymous roles. Before we get into the top 4 lets honorably mention some honorable mentions. First is his debut role as David Wooderson in ‘Dazed and Confused’ solely because of the fact it came with his signature line. Others include: Mickey Haller in ‘The Lincoln Lawyer,’ Dallas in ‘Magic Mike,’ Rust Cohle in ‘True Detective,’ & Buster Moon in ‘Sing.’

Benjamin Barry in ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’- One of the all-time greatest rom coms, and the highlight of McConaughey’s rom com run. The success in this film comes in large part to the charisma of McConaughey in the role & his chemistry with co-star Kate Hudson. Though McConaughey would go onto to leave the world of rom coms in the past, this will always be one of his most iconic roles.

Ron Woodroof in ‘Dallas Buyers Club’- The role that won the man his Oscar. I would be hard pressed to leave it off the list. McConaughey took on a different role playing Ron Woodroof, a real man who was diagnosed with AIDS. He took one of his most dramatic transformations in the role & put a lot of people on notice that he really is one of the best working actors.

Mud in ‘Mud’- This is a hot take. But ‘Mud’ is a great movie & McConaughey is great in the title role. A coming of age drama set in Arkansas, I would very much describe the film as a modern day Mark Twain story. The story follows two boys who come across a hidden fugitive (McConaughey) and the bond that the boys form with him, despite the mystery surrounding the man. It truly is one of his most underrated films & I would strongly recommend it.

Joseph Cooper in ‘Interstellar’- Hands down, McConaughey’s best role in what is one of the best movies ever. I think this is one of the best performances to not receive an Oscar nomination. McConaughey gives an (inter)stellar performance that brings emotion to a genre that often struggles in that aspect. Playing a father who wants to see the world survive for his kids, this is a role that I will never get tired of watching and will always bring a tear to my eye.
