Trap

Review: Since it’s now streaming on Max, I was able to watch M. Night Shyamalan’s newest film and all things considered it was pretty decent. An interesting concept that was brought to life by very campy performances, this film is a roller coaster of a viewing experience. The performances were a little much at times, but honestly worked well in the film and Josh Hartnett was masterful. I think keeping the cast fairly small was a good choice with Ariel Donoghue & Saleka Night Shyamalan filling out the main three. Alison Pill, Hayley Mills, & Jonathan Langdon play solid supporting roles and Russ & Kid Cudi appear in welcome cameo-esque roles. Of course featuring a twist at the end (the director’s signature move) it does stay grounded throughout which is a rare feature in Shyamalan’s filmography.

High: The cinematography was really well done. I loved the camera angles, specifically the variety of POV shots (one of which resulted in the popular meme). Shoutout to cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom for his awesome work on this one.

Low: I really don’t think they should’ve left the venue with 1/3 of the movie left. The concept was what it had really going for it and it just felt like it got weird, silly, & convoluted after they left the concert.
