Thelma

Review: This film from earlier this year stars June Squibb in the titular role as an elderly woman who gets scammed over the phone for thousands of dollars and decides to take matters into her own hands to get the money back. She recruits some help from some old friends along the way & has to deal with all that comes with being a nonagenarian. This is honestly a very outing that got some good laughs & was able to play on ‘old people’ tropes without feeling cliché. I’m not sure what a better climax for this movie could’ve been than three elderly people gathered around an old computer trying their best to figure out what they need to do and having no idea. She eventually just had to give up and call her grandson, because that’s what old people do. I also found it funny the premise of this was very similar to another 2024 film, ‘The Beekeeper’ but in this one the hero is June Squibb, not Jason Statham. But hey, tomato potato right?

High: The dynamic between Thelma and her grandson, Danny (Fred Hechinger) is so sweet. They love each other so much. I couldn’t help but think of my Nanny while watching this one. I think she would’ve had a similar reaction to Thelma in that situation. I’m not sure if Thelma reminded me of her due to that, or just the fact that she’s a grandma and I miss my own, but that definitely added to my viewing experience.

Low: I think it was an interesting casting choice to bring in Malcolm McDowell as the villain, but to not have him very heavily featured. It’s not an awful low, but it just was a tad curious to me.
