Revelations
Review: One area that I really struggle when it comes to watching movies is in my consumption of non-English language films. That is something I am looking to improve on this year, so when I read saw on TikTok that there was a Korean mystery thriller releasing on Netflix, I decided to check it out. And I’m glad I did. I can tell you from an outside point of view that Korean cinema really seems to be thriving right now, and this film is no exception. A mystery thriller about a pastor (Ryu Jun-yeol) who believes he is hearing directly from God and acts accordingly, this film was very creative and really kept me on the edge of my seat. There were several close up shots on the different characters that were really well done and this was also a very well edited film. I almost hesitate to say this, but I think this may be the best 2025 film I’ve seen at this point in the year. I personally elect for watching foreign films in their original language with subtitles if I have the chance, and I’d say if you don’t mind consuming content that way, go check this film out.
High: Ryu Jun-yeol’s performance as Pastor Min-chan was the best I’ve seen in a film this year. He plays an extremely complex character with so many layers and is able to display so many thoughts and emotions just through his face. The film also stars Shin Hyun-been as a detective & Shin Min-jae as an ex-con, and really all three performances are extremely effective.
Low: For the first half of them I thought that the sub-storyline with Detective Yeon-hee (Shin Hyun-been) was unnecessary, but that switched gears about halfway through the film to where I quickly became just as invested in that.
