Fantastic Four

Review: This is incredibly nostalgic film for me, I think even more than the ‘X-Men’ or ‘Spider-Man’ films of the 00s. It does the origin story dynamic very well and I have a lot of good things to say. The fact it doesn’t shy away from the fact the Ben Grimm is not happy with his powers and the acceptance he has to go through is great for the character. I also think the character designs are all great, especially The Thing. The prosthetics, make-up, and costuming they did to Michael Chiklis really brings the character to life. Some of the effects didn’t age very well (e.g. frozen Reed). All the costumes are great for both the 4 and Doctor Doom. I also like that the final act is done as a team effort, which I think is really important to the dynamics of these characters.

High: The cast (like most of these comic movies from the 00s) is great. I think Chiklis, Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, & Julian McMahon are all very well cast. Interesting to note that Mr. Robert Downey Jr., was considered for the role of Doom. That could be interesting, I would’ve loved to have seen him play the character. Oh well. You may notice an actor I neglected to mention (intentionally). Chris Evans is the stand out, as he perfectly embodies the character of Johnny Storm (RIP). It’s incredible to me that he can play both the Human Torch and Captain America brilliantly when they’re such different characters.

Low: I’d say the low was that, at times, it got a little too campy. My main example of this would be Dr. Doom. At times he felt a little too ‘quipy’ which just does not fit the character, in my opinion at least.
