Top 10 Unofficial Movie Trilogies

There are some fantastic movie trilogies. ‘The Godfather.’ The OG ‘Star Wars.’ ‘The Lord of the Rings.’ This is a list of it’s own, but today we’re going to be talking about some movie trilogies that aren’t officially official. some of these movies are often paired together and some of them have ZERO relation or correlation to each other. And I should cite my sources for these. I got a lot of them from Reddit lol.

Save Matt Damon Trilogy: ‘Saving Private Ryan,’ ‘Interstellar,’ & ‘The Martian’- The inspiration for this list, I was just talking to my father-in-law about this trilogy. I absolutely love it and have talked about it before. These are three fantastic movies about everyone going all out just to save Matt Damon. It’s a twist in ‘Interstellar,’ but honestly that makes it more fun. And to display my own personal love for these, I think ‘Saving Private Ryan’ is a fantastic movie, and both of the sci-fi films are both in my top five favorite movies of all-time.

Dollars Trilogy: ‘A Fistful of Dollars,’ ‘For a Few Dollars More,’ & ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’- Now many people may think this is an official trilogy, they all feature who appears to be a very similar unnamed character played by Clint Eastwood. But, director Sergio Leone did not intend for them to be a series, and each film can be viewed independently of the rest.

Kevin Costner Baseball Trilogy: ‘Bull Durham,’ ‘Field of Dreams,’ & ‘For Love of the Game’- Kevin Costner must really like baseball. In back-to-back years he starred in ‘Bull Durham’ & ‘Field of Dreams,’ and a decade later he returned to the field in ‘For Love of the Game.’

Three Flavours Cornetto: ‘Shaun of the Dead,’ ‘Hot Fuzz,’ & ‘The World’s End’- These films serve as an anthology series of sorts. They feature the same director, Edgar Wright, and the same two starring actors, Simon Pegg & Nick Frost. Many of the other featured players (Bill Night, Martin Freeman) also appear in all the films.

Rachel McAdams Loves a Time Travler Trilogy: ‘The Time Traveler’s Wife,’ ‘About Time,’ & ‘Doctor Strange’- This one really is more of a coincidence than anything. Somehow McAdams manages to star in three films about loving a time traveler, and they all are DISTINCTLY different films.

Different Seasons Trilogy: ‘Stand By Me,’ ‘The Shawshank Redemption,’ & ‘Apt Pupil’- What links these three films is the source material. All three were novellas in Stephen King’s 1982 collection, ‘Different Seasons.’ They, along with the fourth story yet to be adapted to film, ‘The Breathing Method,’ are much more dramatic than King’s usual horror stories.

4th, 5th, 6th Trilogy: ‘The Fourth Kind,’ ‘The Fifth Element,’ & ‘The Sixth Sense’- Now there are many films that have numbers you could just throw together like this. The reason these specific films made it is because ‘The Fourth Kind’ stars Milla Jovovich & ‘The Sixth Sense’ stars Bruce Willis, and ‘The Fifth Element’ serves as the connector starring both Jovovich & Willis. Yes this a stretch, but I thought it was worth mentioning nonetheless.

Western Numbers Trilogy: ‘The Ridiculous 6,’ ‘The Magnificent Seven,’ & ‘The Hateful Eight’- Similar to the last entry, any 3 subsequent number films could be stuck together, but these work because they’re all Westerns. All 3 films were released within a nine-month timeframe and they also, funnily, get better as they go. ‘The Ridiculous 6’ famously has a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the latter entries receiving 64% & 75%, respectively.

Driving Trilogy: ‘The Driver,’ ‘Drive,’ & ‘Baby Driver’- Not only do these films all have the word ‘Drive’ in them, but they have vaguely similar plots. While we learn that Ansel Elgort’s character in ‘Baby Driver’ is named Miles, he mostly goes by baby, while in the other two films, the leads’ names are never learned.

Nic Cage Action Trilogy: ‘The Rock,’ ‘Con Air,’ & ‘Face/Off’- Finally we have the Nic Cage ‘96-’97 action film trilogy. I’ll admit I’m not the biggest fan of Cage, but the fact he released these three films all within a year (‘Con Air’ & ‘Face/Off’ in the same month actually), is pretty legendary.
