Top 10 Movies Based on Fanfictions

Fanfictions are an integral part of a fandom. They can provide you with stories and sometimes even head canon that can enhance a story. They also can sometimes be weird and super sexual. Sometimes fanfics become so prevalent they develop into stories all their own, and in a handful of cases, those stories become films.

The Idea of You- The 2024 film that I plan on watching this evening is based on a book by Robinne Lee. The book finds its roots in a fanfic about Harry Styles and an older woman. The film from Amazon cast Anne Hathaway in the lead role and well, I haven’t watched it as of writing this, but I should have a review out so go read that.

After- Another one based on Harry Styles? Wow. Good for him. I think I might’ve seen the first movie in this series. When I began my research for this list I thought it was the ‘After Trilogy,’ but it appears there are FIVE of these movies with TWO MORE in development. Wow. Good for them.

Twilight- One of the most relevant film series of the 21st century, the ‘Twilight’ saga comes from the book series by Stephanie Meyer. Meyer has revealed that the novels began as an idea she had from a dream and where heavily influenced as a ‘My Chemical Romance’ fan fiction. These lists I’m writing have been so strange.

Fifty Shades of Grey- Truly one of the more famous examples on this list, ‘Fifty Shades’ was originally a ‘Twilight’ fan fiction. So its a film series based on a book series based on a fan fiction based on a book series based on a fan fiction based on a dream. Fanfic-ception.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones- Once again based on a book series, this film, starring Lily Collins & Jamie Campbell Bower was considered a disappointment on its release. However the series it find its roots in is not a disappointment, and is actually the highest selling book series ever, ‘Harry Potter’.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies- See not all fanfics have to be sex. Sometimes you can just add zombies to stuff and that will be cool (that’s going to be a list for sure). I need to watch this film. I just added it to my 1,000+ watchlist on Letterboxd.

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock- Okay no, ‘Star Trek’ is not a fanfiction. But this specific storyline originated from a poem published in a ‘Star Trek’ fan magazine, which is honestly really cool.

Through My Window- This Spanish film from 2022 takes its root from an original story posted on Wattpad, which is really the main website for fanfics. Both this and the next two entries are technically original works, though being published on Wattpad, I still consider them fanfics.

The Kissing Booth- One of Netflix’s most successful film series, the story of Elle falling in love with her best friend’s brother also comes from a Wattpad post and has since become a trilogy. I believe its true claim to fame is putting Jacob Elordi on the map.

Perfect Addiction- Finally we have the 2023 film starring Ross Butler about an MMA trainer whose MMA fighter cheats on her so she starts to train his rival and I assume they fall in love. I’m not sure what else to say. The End?
